Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 release date, maps, and more

Want to know what the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 release date is?The new FPS game was first teased by developer Infinity Ward who confirmed its existence with a shiny new ‘MWII’ logo on Twitter. Modern Warfare 2 is a direct sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare 1 reboot. The next instalment sees Captain Price assembling a new group, Task Force 141, to take down the Russian terrorist Victor Zakhaev.

Activision Blizzard’s first quarter financial report says Modern Warfare 2’s development is “proceeding very well”, and we now know the Modern Warfare 2 release date after it was announced in May. The publisher also promised that Modern Warfare 2 “will be the most advanced experience in franchise history”.

At the same time, the team is also working on a brand-new Warzone 2 experience which is said to be built from the ground up. Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard launched before their big Warzone overhauls, and it looks like the same thing could happen with Warzone 2. Here’s everything revealed and rumoured so far about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 so far, including the release date, game modes, and much more.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 release date

Modern Warfare 2 will release on October 28.

The announcement video doesn’t show any gameplay, but it does give confirmation of several Modern Warfare 2 characters, drawn from the long history of the series. Captain Price makes a return, as does Modern Warfare reboot protagonist Sgt. Kyle ‘Gaz’ Garrick, Soap MacTavish from the original Modern Warfare series, and even masked-man extraordinaire Simon ‘Ghost’ Riley.

In April, a select number of fans and influencers were given the opportunity to get the first sneak peek preview of Modern Warfare 2 at an exclusive event during the NFL 2022 Draft in Las Vegas.

Since Black Ops Cold War, Call of Duty titles have been released on both current and previous-gen consoles, as well as PC. Once again, much like the trend in release dates for the Call of Duty franchise, speculation falls on Activision Blizzard following suit with 2022’s Modern Warfare, despite the recent acquisition by Microsoft.

Tom Henderson revealed in a tweet that Modern Warfare 2 is coming to both current and last generation consoles. He added, “It’s currently believed that this will be the last Call of Duty coming to past generation consoles, but it will ultimately depend on the console market conditions.”

It’s been difficult for gamers to get their hands on the latest electronics, including the current generation of consoles and high-end PC components. Some developers have made the decision to release their games on the last generation of consoles to ensure it gets into as many hands as possible. In the case of Modern Warfare 2, it’s likely the game’s visuals won’t be drastically different from the first game if the developers are unable to use a new engine built for the latest hardware.

Most games in the Call of Duty franchise ship with three game modes; Campaign, Multiplayer, and a third mode such as Spec Ops or Zombies in Black Ops Cold War. TheGhostofHope returns with some rumours around the third game mode that players can expect in the new Modern Warfare 2.

In a tweet, they call the new game mode for Modern Warfare 2, DMZ (Demilitarized Zone), which will reportedly launch in beta. DMZ is inspired by Escape from Tarkov in which leaker Hope says, “What you take with you, you can lose. More tactical”.

TheGhostofHope also suggested that DMZ features “a marketplace where items can be bought and traded,” which would mark a first for the Call of Duty franchise. They add, “You are able to earn skins, blueprints, and more from DMZ that are usable across Multiplayer and eventually Warzone 2.”

There’s also talk from leaker, RalphsValve, of a brand-new multiplayer game mode inspired by Rainbow Six Siege called Attackers vs Defenders. Destruction is said to play a major role in this mode as the attacking side tries to break through the map to reach the defenders. The defenders have access to hidden locations, cameras, and boobytraps to stop the attackers in their tracks. Take all of this with a grain of salt as these rumours haven’t been confirmed just yet.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 maps

As with any reboot, there’s always the hope that fan favourite maps make their way back to the modern game. If Modern Warfare 1 is anything to go by, we can expect to see some returning maps in Modern Warfare 2, though this may not be the case at launch. Crash and Shipment, two staples Modern Warfare 1 maps were added to the rebooted game in Season 1.

If the new DMZ game mode does come into fruition, leaker TheGhostofHope reports four new maps are in development for this game mode alone. Adding, “All of these maps differ considerably in design; some are catered for open-world, others more concentrated and dense.”

In July 2021, the state of California filed a lawsuit against Activision Blizzard alleging years of workplace discrimination and harassment. The story has since embroiled CEO Bobby Kotick and prompted the US federal government to open an investigation. It continues to unfold and to be of immense importance to the game industry.
